Warrior Select Basketball Information Guide

Established in 2009, Warrior Select Basketball is the feeder program for the Edmonds-Woodway High School (EWHS) boys basketball program. The program includes 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams, drawing players from within the EWHS boundaries. Teams compete in the AAU-sanctioned WESCO Youth Basketball League, which includes 20 teams from Snohomish, North King and Skagit counties. Goals and objectives: The goal of WSB is to prepare players to enter the EWHS boys basketball program. Objectives of the program include having fun, teaching essential basketball skills, teaching participants to compete against quality opponents, building a winning tradition, teaching life lessons through the medium of basketball, and encouraging the positive attitude, enthusiasm, and work ethic it takes to be successful at basketball -- and life. Tryouts/notifications: Tryouts in 2018 are on Oct. 7th, from 5-7 p.m. at Edmonds-Woodway High School. Players who try out will be notified by Oct. 10th of the coach’s decision. Players who are not selected are strongly encouraged to pursue other opportunities through their school, or through Recreational leagues such as SnoKing Youth Club (http://www.skyc.net/index.html) or Alderwood Boys & Girls Club (http://bgcsc.org/snohomish-clubs/alderwood-club/alderwood-sports/). Parent/player meeting: Following selection notification, a meeting for parents and players will be held on (date/time TBD), in the Great Hall (cafeteria) at EWHS. At this meeting, parents/players will order uniforms (if needed), meet coaches, make a mandatory first payment and get important information about the program. Number of players per team:
We prefer that each team have 10 players. However, the number of players carried can vary at the discretion of the coach and the WSB Board of Directors. Playing up a grade is not permissible in our program, however it is permissible for 4th graders to try out for the 5th grade team. That said, 4th graders will only be chosen in such case that there are not enough 5th graders to fill a roster. Time commitment/attendance:
Players are expected to be at each practice and all games. If a player must miss a practice or game, it is expected that the player will contact his coach as soon as possible.
Practices: Practices begin early November. Practices days, times and locations are TBD. League games:
The WESCO game schedule will be out in mid-November. There are 20 programs in the league. Typically, games start in early- to mid-December with playoffs ending by mid-March. Generally, each team plays two league games on Saturdays. Typically, 5th and 7th grade teams played at 1:30 and 4:10 p.m.; 6th and 8th grade teams play at 2:50 and 5:30 p.m. Three to five home stands (two games each) will be played at EWHS. Road games will be played at other WESCO high school gyms. Tournaments:
In addition to regular season games, WESCO holds an end-of-season tournament in early March. Our WSB teams also will play in 2 invitational tournaments, including holiday tournaments at Thanksgiving (Kirkland) and MLK (Bellingham). Most, but not all, parents and players choose to stay in a hotel for the Bellingham tourney We will reserve a block of rooms. Playing time:
Playing time is earned on the basis of effort, attention, commitment, and ability displayed in practice and games. The purpose of the feeder program is to develop young athletes in preparation to compete at the high school level. The program is competitive and coaches will focus on how best to develop talent and put their team in the best position to win. Playing time is not guaranteed and may fluctuate depending on the competition, a player’s effort, attitude, and abilities. Playing on other teams:
We recognize and encourage athletes to compete in other sports. However, during basketball season, we expect players to attend all practices and games. Making WSB the number one sport activity during the season is essential to ensure your son gets as much out of the experience as possible. Coaches:
The board strives each year to bring in the very best coaches we can find. Non-parent coaches are preferred but that is not always possible. Coaches devote many hours of their time to practices and games. Although we try to provide a modest stipend to help cover expenses for gas, food and (occasionally) lodging, they are not coaching for the money. Please treat them with respect and understanding. If you have concerns, feel free to speak with them directly. Cost:
The WSB Program fee for 2018-19 is $425 per season, plus approx $125-$150 for uniform (uniforms include shorts, jersey, shooting shirt and travel bag). PAYABLE BY CHECK, CASH or CREDIT CARDS. In addition, each player MUST PURCHASE AN AAU CARD (approximately $16). NOTE:
Players will not be allowed to practice or play in games if payments are not current.  Fees cover expenses such as gym rentals and school district maintenance personnel costs, 3 tournament entry fees, referee fees, coaches’ stipends, equipment and other expenses. Additional tournaments, if any, cost extra. Partial scholarships are available and will be considered by the board based on financial need.
Parent expectations
WSB players are boys and an important objective of the program is to have fun.  We expect parents to encourage players. Good sportsmanship and positive attitudes are expected at all times. Please refrain from publicly criticizing any player, parent, coach or referee at any time. Volunteering:
WSB depends on parent volunteers. We need a team parent for each grade to help the coach with scheduling and team communications. We also need volunteers to keep score, run the time clock, set up and take down equipment at the gyms for home games, staff the snack table and serve on the board. Please contact a board member if interested. If you don’t volunteer, you likely will be asked. Contributing:
